What does one say....

Oh, what to say. Ever have those moments in life where you wonder what is going on in someone else's brain? Or wanted to just bluntly ask..."What the crap happened?" I have these more than most people should, I hate to admit.
Yesterday, Dallas and I drove to the bakery to pick up Reese's birthday cake. This bakery is awesome. They are priced reasonably, the cakes taste unbelievable and (until yesterday) they wow you with their ability to make modern, creative children's cakes.
I asked for a Minnie Mouse cake. I wanted it simple, really. Plain mouse ears with a bow (NO FACE...I kept picturing a Wal-Mart drawing of a mouse with shaky fingers) and Happy Birthday Reese. She opened it up and showed us the cake. Hmmmm......Dallas and I paused. He walked off. I said..."Ok. Ok. (I repeat things when I get uncomfortable to say what I am really feeling). "Yes. Ok. And the other cake???"
The other cake was my own little cake of perfection in my mind.
Why did I not bring a picture?
Why did I dream of the cuteness of this cake for a week?
The anticipation.
Before you see it, you need to know, I wanted a little cake just for Reese that looked like a Reese's peanut butter cup. Get it? Reese's. I wanted it to be a cake on the inside but the outside to look just like a peanut butter cup with a big "2" on the outside.
They told me they could easily do that. I trusted them, they've made some unreal cakes, right?
Here is what lie before Dallas and I at the bakery.
Aerial view...(it actually had this without the writing on it at first.)
And the sides. Those look Just.Like.A.Reese's.Peanut.Butter.Cup, right?
"Hmmmm......Ok.,Ok.,Ok.,Ok." Dallas stares, tries to make eye contact with me, then just exits the store.
I am still saying OK.
Fear of getting really ***chy over a cake (I know, it's just a CAKE) I said, "This is supposed to be a Reese's peanut Butter Cup." The lady said, "It is. I think it looks like one, don't you?"
This is one of those moments in life where you want to present yourself as a Christian, you want to treat her like you would want your mom to be treated, I had to think about my clients, what if they hated my work??? but....she DID ask....
"Uhm, No. It doesn't." (with a smile) I almost added in a "Bless your Heart" after that but I thought it to be a tad rude.
We both sat in silence and stared at it as if it would change right before us into something we both agreed to like. Sadly, for me, it did not.
I said, "Where's the 2?" At this point it just had an upside down Reese's peanut cup in the middle. What was that? Dallas was VERY concerned as to why it was up-side-down. Was someone drinking at the bakery???
She replied, "Oops, I can add a two. Do you want me to?" Yes, please, a big two.
She came back with the word "2nd" in small letters written on it. Did you see it up there in the picture?
That was it for me.
I just ask if I could pay. I think she gave me a discount because the total was much cheaper that it was supposed to be.
I got in the car and showed Dallas. He said "Why does it say 2nd? Why did you do that?"
"I didn't!!"
My question is..."Who won 1st?!?!"
We had a good laugh. A really good laugh.
Needlessly to say our "3rd" won't come from them.
Here's to hoping it tastes better than it looks...

  1. Oh Jenn. You are a better woman than me. The "2nd" is quite funny (especially when you asked 'who won 1st?') but what was that woman (or the bakery for that matter) thinking??? Dontcha know we just gotta do things ourselves! At least we know everything else will be right on point. I mean, those invitations are to die for in cuteness and professionalism.

Have a great party and give Reese a big birthday hug for us!

  4. This happened to me too at Sam's 1st b-day. I drove an hour the day of the party to pick up his cake which was suppose to be his name with huge polka dots all over it. The letters were crooked and the dots were tiny pin drops scattered all over the place. It was horrible. I was a basket case. I refused to take the cake and we ended up making cupcakes before the party. Sam had no clue and Reese won't either, but I sure was disappointed. I understand completely!

  8. I am sure Reese loved her cake anyway, but I wish I lived near you... I would have gladly made her cakes and it would have looked just like a Reese's pb cup! I hope it tasted great.

  11. That is just what I needed this morning a good laugh. I cannot believe that it does not look anything like a Reese's, and the whole upside down thing. I guess I don't get it either. Thanks for sharing this truly made me laugh out loud.

After a while birthdays and birthday parties start to run together. Because of this cake, you'll never forget, "2nd". What a great story to tell!?!?
